# Create dashboards

> Create a dashboard by cloning the built-in one, starting empty, or duplicating an existing dashboard, then rename, delete, or copy it between projects.

The built-in **Cost and quality** dashboard covers all data in your project, but it is read-only. To change what a dashboard shows, create one of your own.

Creating, editing, renaming, and deleting dashboards requires the project-level **Projects > Update** [permission](https://docs.braintrust.dev/admin/access-control.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Creating dashboards is only available on [Pro and Enterprise plans](https://docs.braintrust.dev/plans-and-limits.md#plans).

## Create a dashboard

You have three starting points:

* **Clone the built-in dashboard**: Open **Cost and quality** and click **Clone dashboard** to copy its charts into an editable dashboard. Use this when the preset charts are close to what you want.
* **Start empty**: On the [** Dashboards**](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/~/dashboards) page, click **Dashboard** to create a dashboard with no charts. From an open dashboard, click **Dashboard actions** > **New dashboard** to create an empty dashboard and open it.
* **Duplicate an existing dashboard**: Click **Dashboard actions** > **Duplicate dashboard**.

On a dashboard you created, changes save automatically. This applies to adding, editing, and removing charts, and to filter and grouping changes.

## Rename or delete a dashboard

Click **Dashboard actions**, then choose **Rename dashboard** or **Delete**.

To remove several at once, select them on the dashboards list and choose **Delete selected dashboards**. Built-in dashboards cannot be selected or deleted.

Dashboards created before dashboards became project-scoped are also stored at the organization level. Deleting one requires the organization-level **Update** [permission](https://docs.braintrust.dev/admin/access-control.md), even when it appears alongside your project dashboards. Without that permission, **Delete** does not appear for those dashboards.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a dashboard is permanent. For a dashboard that is also stored at the organization level, deleting it removes both copies. This action cannot be undone.

## Copy a dashboard to another project

If you have built a useful dashboard in one project, copy it to another rather than recreating it.

> [tab] UI
>
> 1. Go to the [\*\* Dashboards\*\*](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/~/dashboards) page in your source project and open the dashboard you want to copy.
> 2. Click **Dashboard config** in the page header and choose \*\* Export dashboard config\*\* to download a JSON file, or \*\* Copy dashboard config\*\* to copy the configuration to your clipboard.
> 3. Go to the [\*\* Dashboards\*\*](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/~/dashboards) page in your destination project and open the dashboard you want to import into.
> 4. Click **Dashboard config** and choose \*\* Import dashboard config\*\* to upload the JSON file, or paste the copied configuration anywhere on the page using your keyboard.
> * On a dashboard you created, choose **Replace current dashboard**.
>
> * On the built-in **Cost and quality** dashboard, which is read-only, choose **Create new dashboard** and give it a name.
>
> > [!WARNING]
> >
> > **Replace current dashboard** permanently overwrites that dashboard's charts, notes, filters, and settings. This action cannot be undone.

> [tab] API
>
> 1. Use the [list views](https://docs.braintrust.dev/api-reference/views/list-views.md) API endpoint to fetch the "monitor" views in your source project. Pass the following query parameters:
>
> * `object_type=project`
> * `object_id=<source-project-id>`
> * `view_type=monitor`
>
>    ```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
> curl --request GET \
> --url 'https://api.braintrust.dev/v1/view?object_type=project&object_id=<source-project-id>&view_type=monitor' \
> --header 'Authorization: Bearer <your-api-key>'
> ```
>
> Older org-owned views are stored at the organization level. To include them, list with `object_type=org_project` and `object_id=<your-org-id>`.
> 2. In the response, find the view you want to copy and copy its `view_data` and `options` payloads.
> 3. Use the [create view](https://docs.braintrust.dev/api-reference/views/create-view.md) API endpoint to create the view in the destination project. Set `object_id` to the destination project ID. In the `options` payload, be sure to set `projectId` to the destination project ID as well.
>
>    ```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"github-light","dark":"github-dark-dimmed"}}
> curl --request POST \
> --url https://api.braintrust.dev/v1/view \
> --header 'Authorization: Bearer <your-api-key>' \
> --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
> --data '
>      {
> "object_type": "project",
> "object_id": "<destination-project-id>",
> "view_type": "monitor",
> "name": "<new-view-name>",
> "view_data": <view-data-payload>,
> "options": <options-payload>
> }'
> ```

> [!TIP]

> To copy a single chart instead of a full dashboard, see [Move and copy charts](https://docs.braintrust.dev/observe/dashboards/build-charts.md#move-and-copy-charts).
