# How to configure OpenAI for EU organizations

## Summary

For EU organizations, entering an OpenAI API key in Braintrust can trigger a validation error because automatic key validation targets the global OpenAI endpoint instead of the EU base URL.

Configure OpenAI as a custom provider with the EU OpenAI API key and explicitly set the EU API base URL. Use **Test** to validate against the configured endpoint. A validation error from entering the key does not establish whether the EU endpoint works. Once configured, use the custom provider for requests.

## Applies to

**Plans:** Any
**Deployments:** Any

## Configuration steps

### Step 1: Configure custom provider

Go to ** Settings** > [** Models**](https://www.braintrust.dev/app/~/configuration/models/organization). Click **Organization provider**, or select the **Project** tab and click **Project provider**, then select **Custom providers** > **New**.

### Step 2: Enter credentials

1. Choose **OpenAI** under **Provider** and enter a provider name, such as `OpenAI EU`.
2. Choose **API key** authentication and enter your EU OpenAI API key.
3. On the **Form** tab, set **API base URL** to `https://eu.api.openai.com/v1`.
4. Set **Authorization header format** to **Bearer**.

### Step 3: Test and save

1. Click **Test** to validate the key against the configured EU endpoint. If this test fails, check the key and endpoint before proceeding.
2. Click **Create** to save the provider, or **Update** when editing an existing provider.
3. [Browse and test models](https://docs.braintrust.dev/admin/ai-providers.md#browse-and-test-models) to run a request through this provider.

In your playground, prompt, or Gateway request, select or route to the custom `OpenAI EU` provider.
